Paul’s Thanksgiving

Dr-Albert-N-MartinAlbert N. Martin

Turn with me, please, to 1 Thessalonians chapter 1. After an ordinary greeting brought by Paul, Silas and Timothy to the church of the Thessalonians, Paul in verse two—as he often does—records his prayers of thanksgiving for the Thessalonian believers. He tells them, “We give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our prayers.” Then he tells them the things that give him occasion to be thankful to God for the Thessalonians.

What is a Christian?

Dr-Albert-N-MartinAlbert N. Martin

What is a Christian? Let me suggest that when we turn to the Word of God, in the Scriptures themselves, this question is answered to us in terms of three simple categories of biblical realities. What is a Christian? The first part of the answer is this: a Christian is one who has honestly faced the personal problem of sin. Now, one of the most wonderful and amazing things about true, Bible Christianity is that it is essentially and fundamentally a religion for sinners.

The Salvation of Christ (2)

Dr-Albert-N-MartinAlbert N. Martin

In 2 Corinthians 5 the Apostle Paul has been writing about his own life and his own ministry. He’s been telling the Corinthians what makes him tick as a minister of the gospel, that he is driven by an ambition to please Jesus Christ. (Verse 9.) He is driven by the constraining love of Christ. (Verse 14.) Then he tells us in the language of the text in verse 17, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation: the old has gone; the new has come. And all this is from God.”

The Salvation of Christ (1)

Dr-Albert-N-MartinAlbert N. Martin

Attachment to the Person of Christ and adherence to the Word of Christ are inseparable realities in the salvation of Christ. Now, I’m not trying to be clever or cute with words in stating the proposition that way. I’ve labored to reduce to the simplest common denominator this very vital truth of the Word of God: that attachment to the Person of Christ and adherence to the Word of Christ are inseparable realities in the salvation of Christ.

What is the Gospel? (2)

Dr-Albert-N-MartinAlbert N. Martin

Some of you will know that in recent months I have been engaged in a series of expositions of individual texts of the Word of God; texts that in a very focused and concentrated way set forth some of the central truths of the gospel, of the grace of God. I have brought these texts under a heading of a series entitled “Simple Signposts to the Celestial City.”

The Son of Man is Coming (1)

Dr-Albert-N-MartinAlbert N. Martin

Matthew’s Gospel and the 24th chapter begins with our Lord Jesus going out from the temple area in Jerusalem. As He is passing by the temple there is this response of the disciples to what they saw, speaking of the magnificence of the temple, and they show the buildings of the temple to our Lord. According to verse 2, he replies by saying..

Life or Death (2)

Dr-Albert-N-MartinAlbert N. Martin

The words of Romans 6:23 say, “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Using the imagery of the signpost that we have used throughout this entire series, having seen from this signpost the contrasting destinations to which it points, notice with me secondly: the contrasting basis for arriving at these destinations.

Life or Death (1)

Dr-Albert-N-MartinAlbert N. Martin

In the words of Romans 6 and verse 23, “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Now, using the imagery of the signpost that we have used throughout this entire series, unlike other of the signposts that we have considered, where perhaps there were two lines or words combined with symbols and separated by hyphens, this signpost is different in that as we look at it from afar we are immediately struck with the fact that instead of just one signboard on the vertical post, there are two.

Behold, Now is the Day of Salvation (2)

Dr-Albert-N-MartinAlbert N. Martin

You had better take sin as seriously as God does in this life, or you’ll have a whole eternity to regret that you didn’t. You got me? So when this signpost gets our attention with the double trumpet blast—“behold, behold”—it is to call our attention to the great issue of salvation.
