Thoughts on the Capitol Crisis
D. Scott Meadows
1. Lord, have mercy! The first and most important thing we can do is pray. 1 Timothy 2.1-2, “I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; for kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.” A stable government and social peace are useful toward this end. Jeremiah 29:7, “And seek the peace of the city whither I have caused you to be carried away captives, and pray unto the Lord for it: for in the peace thereof shall ye have peace.” Let American Christians take this to heart as we pray for our country.
2. Do not trust in any politicians or any human government, including the USA, as you trust in the Lord. Psalm 118:8–9, “It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man. It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in princes.” Idols always fail their worshippers. All the nations of this world, as nations, are doomed. All God’s elect from all the nations will be saved.
3. Understand that corruption, whether spiritual, moral, or political, along with social disorder and physical violence, are just examples of sinners thinking and behaving badly. There is plenty of blame to go around. Our only hope is the Lord Jesus Christ. Those who believe the gospel and follow Christ faithfully always prove to be blessings to their neighbors. Let us be those good examples.
4. Pray that these alarming developments will induce many to humble themselves and to seek the Lord. And let us do what we can to spread the gospel near and far. May the Lord give us much love for Him and for our neighbors, with courage to live and speak for Him.
