A woman once attended a communion service where Ebenezer Erskine was one of the preachers. She was greatly blessed under his ministry and decided to go and hear him at the next opportunity. This she did, but she got very little out of his sermon – or at least, none of the strong impressions that she received on the first occasion. She felt somewhat upset, and decided to approach the preacher after the service, and ask him why he thought there could be such a difference for her in the two occasions. “Madam,” said the minister, “the reason is this: last Sabbath you went to hear Jesus Christ, but today you have come to hear.”
