The Christian Hope (Psa 119.6)

Then shall I not be ashamed,
When I have respect unto all thy commandments (Psa 119.6).

The psalmist is not only a model of what we should be, but also a real-life example of what true believers really are. James reminds us that Elijah, one of the greatest OT saints, was “subject to like passions as we are,” and as he prayed for great things and received them, so may we (Jas 5.16-18). Similarly, Psa 119.6 is both a guide and mark of true Christian believers. All have the same hope, and this hope will increase with spiritual maturity. Anyone who lacks this hope is still unconverted. And what was this hope, thus expressed?

Aching for Righteousness (Psa 119.5)

“O that my ways were directed to keep thy statutes!”

Perhaps we have all wanted something so badly we were aching for it. I remember this feeling when I was growing up in the weeks before Christmas, anticipating the possibility that I might receive some particular gift. Strong desires for certain things probably never leave most people, no matter how old, as long as they remain sharp. What is your greatest wish for yourself right now? What is it that you desire so badly, that you could truly say you are aching for it?

God’s Authority and Requirement in His Precepts (Psa 119.4)

Thou hast commanded us to keep thy precepts diligently (Psa 119.4).

We just considered the blessedness of devout Christians, the topic of Psa 119.1-3. There we learned that devotion to God and His Word are inextricably linked, and that those so devoted to both are the most blessed of all, living in communion with God and His Word, exemplifying godliness in all their conduct. These things being so, who would not aspire to become so blessed?

The Blessedness of Devout Christians (Psa 119.1-3)

Are you a devout [having and showing deep religious commitment, totally committed to a cause or belief] Christian? Comes from the verb “devote,” to give one’s all to something, 16th century, dedicate formally, consecrate. Would others who know you best say this about you? How do you conduct your life differently from moral non-Christians?

You will never attain or maintain this spiritual condition until and unless you appreciate its true desirability and excellence, until you sincerely crave it because you heartily approve it. And in general, the more fervent your desire, the more successful will be your pursuit.
