The contemporary dissolution of the family and the demise of true religion today are both attributable to the absence of godly masculinity. The fourth commandment (“Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy”) is addressed to the male head of the home, and the fifth commandment (“Honor your father and mother”) requires that fathers be honorable.

At stake here is the administration of legitimate authority. God has created humankind so as to have His authority implemented through the agency of male leadership. The crying need is for masculine leadership. The crying shame is the abundance of men unable to give proper leadership in their own homes and in the church of Christ.

We know there is a difference between men and women, but what is it? The answer lies in Genesis 2. Adam was given the responsibility to name the animals before Eve was made. This responsibility to define reality under God is the distinctive difference between the man and the woman. Pre-fall Adam epitomizes “godly masculinity”: “godly” in that he lived righteously under the authority of God; “masculine” in that he gave meaning to the created order. When the woman was made, everything was already defined. When Eve was deceived by Satan, she attempted to redefine the forbidden fruit. In the conflict of competing definitions, Adam abdicated his masculinity and exchanged God’s definition for Eve’s. When cursed, God says, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife…” (Gen. 3:16)

Weak, effeminate men, unable and unwilling to define, exercise authority or lead is our demise. Read Isaiah 3. No leadership can be found. The youth rebel against the elderly, the inferior against the honorable (v5). “Their oppressors are children, and women rule over them” (v12). The absence of godly masculinity is indicative of God’s wrath upon us. Have you had enough of confusion and lack of definition? Do you know the Man Jesus? Are you living by His definitions? “Help, Lord, for the godly man ceases to be, for the faithful disappear from among the sons of men.” (Ps 12:1)

We believe that only obedience to Christ will revive what is so sadly missing in our day: godly masculinity.
